THE MORNING HIKE

The Highlight of the Week

For many Cal-a-Vie guests, the Monday-through-Sunday morning hike is the moment the whole stay turns on.

ON THE TRAIL

Meet the estate when the light is kindest.

You gather at first light, before the day has quite decided to begin. A little steel-cut maple oatmeal, a cup of something warm, and then the trailhead — the vineyard rows falling away down the hillside, the air still cool off the coastal hills seven miles inland from the Pacific. Nobody is in a hurry. The pace finds itself, and the estate wakes around you as you climb.

This is the two hundred acres as they are meant to be met — on foot, at the hour the light is kindest. You pass the vines of Château Cal‑a‑Vie, the sycamore woodland, the long views opening over the valley. By the time you come back down, the morning feels earned, and the rest of the day is yours. It is the same walk every day of the week, and somehow never the same walk twice.
