Evenings end beneath the California stars.

Wine at six-thirty, the telescope by nightfall.

AFTER DARK

The Slow Close of the Day

As the hills cool, the shuttles gather at the L'Orangerie foyer and the evening begins to settle around you.

THE EVENING ARC

Dinner, conversation, then the stars.

At half past six, hors d'oeuvres and a glass of Château Cal‑a‑Vie wine — pressed from the estate's own vineyard — are poured in the limestone foyer. It is the day's first true pause: the trail and the treatment room behind you, the long table still to come, conversation drifting easily between guests who, by now, know one another by name.

At seven, dinner arrives by candlelight — a garden-to-table menu carried through course by course, unhurried. And on clear nights the evening does not end at the table. The shuttles return, and a short ride up the hillside carries you to the one place at Cal‑a‑Vie Health Spa built to look not inward, but up.

EVENING STAR-GAZING

The Grandeur Overhead

Tuesdays, after dinner — the dome opens and the sky becomes part of the retreat.

Seven miles inland from the Pacific, far from city light, the night sky here runs deep and uncommonly clear. At nightfall we invite you into the observatory to peer into the cosmos and see whether you can pick out your favorite planets and constellations — the day's quietest, widest close.

A state-of-the-art Takahashi telescope and a wall of screens carry the view down to earth, guided by our resident astronomer. There is no measuring of steps or breath here, only the smallness of oneself against the scale of the solar system — which is, in its own quiet way, its own kind of wellness.

THE SOLAR WALK

A Walk Built to Scale

Saturdays at ten in the morning — meet at the front desk and set out across the grounds.

Not every star-gazing happens after dark. The Solar Walk is a guided stroll across the estate laid out to the true scale of our solar system — each planet a measured distance from the last, the whole of the heavens brought down to the length of a morning walk in the hills.

The walk concludes at the observatory, where guests are treated to a filtered view of the sun through the Takahashi telescope and a short presentation. It is a rare, gentle way to feel the size of things — charming, unhurried, and entirely Cal‑a‑Vie.
