Balanced Macronutrients: Protein, Carbs, and Fats
To fuel your body properly, it’s essential to consume the right balance of macronutrients—protein, carbohydrates, and fats—each of which plays a crucial role in how your body functions.
Protein is vital for building and repairing tissues, making enzymes and hormones, and supporting muscle growth and immune function. Great sources include lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, and legumes.
Carbohydrates provide energy, particularly for your brain and muscles. Choose complex carbs from whole grains, vegetables, and fruits for sustained energy and digestive health.
Fats are essential for cell function, organ protection, and absorbing fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K). Focus on healthy fats from avocados, nuts, seeds, and olive oil while limiting trans fats and saturated fats found in processed foods. It’s also important to avoid seed oils—such as canola, vegetable, sunflower, corn, and soybean oils—as they contribute to inflammation and oxidative stress.
Micronutrients Matter Too: Vitamins and Minerals
While macronutrients get most of the attention, micronutrients—vitamins and minerals—are equally important for maintaining health. These nutrients help regulate various bodily functions, from bone health to immune system support.
For example:
Vitamin C, found in citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, and leafy greens, supports a strong immune system.
Calcium, found in dairy, leafy greens, and almonds, is essential for bone health.
Magnesium, found in dark leafy greens, beans, nuts, seeds, and cacao, supports over 600 metabolic functions in the body and is depleted by stress.
Eating a variety of colorful fruits and vegetables ensures you get a broad range of micronutrients to support your overall well-being.
Hydration is Key
Water is often overlooked but is arguably the most important nutrient for your body. Every cell, tissue, and organ in your body depends on hydration to function properly.
Staying hydrated helps with:
Digestion
Nutrient absorption
Joint lubrication
Temperature regulation
Aim for at least half your body weight in ounces of water per day. Individual needs vary based on age, gender, activity level, and climate, so adjust accordingly—especially if you’re active or in hot environments.
Fiber for Digestion and Gut Support
Fiber, found in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes, plays a crucial role in digestive health. It helps regulate blood sugar levels, supports heart health, and prevents constipation.
A special type of fiber called prebiotic fiber feeds the beneficial bacteria in your gut, promoting a balanced microbiome. To support gut health, include fiber-rich foods such as:
Onions
Apples
Garlic
Jicama
Asparagus
A diverse diet full of colorful plant foods is one of the best ways to keep your gut healthy and happy!
