Our Story

A European spa in the hills of California.

Two-hundred private acres in northern San Diego County, modeled on a French countryside village. Twenty-five years in the making.

Welcome

A haven of health.

Cal‑a‑Vie Health Spa is a 200-acre European-style health and wellness destination set among the rolling hills of Vista, California. Founded in 1986 and reimagined by Terri and John Havens in 2000, the property is now home to thirty-two private accommodations, three sister Maisons, and one of the most decorated spa programs in the United States.

Heritage

Architecture from another century.

Three of the most beloved structures on the property were sourced piece by piece from France, then rebuilt on the hillside. The Chapel was originally constructed in Dijon around 1615. L'Orangerie dates to 1710. The Parish House was built in 1715 in the Burgundy region. Every stone, beam, and tile is original — quietly carrying four centuries of history into your morning.

Founders

A vision rebuilt in 2000.

Terri and John Havens acquired Cal‑a‑Vie in 2000 with a vision: an intimate, deeply personal wellness retreat that felt nothing like a hotel. Every choice since — from the 5:1 staff-to-guest ratio to the gardens that supply the kitchen daily — flows from that original idea.
